An extremely premature infant responding to maternal touch.
A critically-ill infant due to high hemoglobin levels. Timely treatment facilitated rapid recovery.

Our artists arranged some clickable boxes below and challenged us to interpret it - there seems to be a mother here welcoming her infant with open arms. In an infant's life, the mother undoubtedly plays a key role. In addition to safety, her impact is obvious both on social-enviromental outcomes such as emotional and social advancement, nutrition, and education; and in biological ones such as growth, stress responses, and neurodevelopment. We now know that it is the mother who regulates epigenetic memory from her previous and current pregnancies, extranuclear structures such as mitochondria that are inherited solely from her, and the proportions of total DNA that remain active or are chemically suppressed. This list continues to expand as we learn more.
