Akhil Maheshwari, MD, FAAP, FRCP (Edin) is the current Editor-in-Chief of our journal, the Newborn.
Maheshwari received medical education at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh in India. He then relocated to the University of Florida at Gainesville, Florida for further training in clinical pediatrics and laboratory research. Two years later, he relocated with the same team to the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida to continue his research and to receive fellowship training in neonatology.
He has served in faculty and departmental leadership positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of South Florida, and at the Johns Hopkins University. He is an expert in the mechanisms of inflammation in infants, particularly in their gastrointestinal tract. In addition to more than 200 invited lectures, he has published over 145 peer-reviewed articles, contributed 50 chapters in leading textbooks of neonatology, and authored 6 textbooks.
Maheshwari serves on the editorial board of numerous medical journals, and has led many committees to review scientific proposals at the National Institutes of Health and at the American Heart Association. He also serves on the College of Reviewers at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and similar committees in the United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Hong Kong, China. He is an active member of the American Pediatric Society, which seeks to promote child and adolescent health through advocacy, scholarship, education, and leadership. He also works at the Rotary Club (its Metro-Bethesda branch at Washington DC).
